Why You Have to Be Picky With the Time You Have

Written By Jacob Finney - November 18th 2025

Time is pretty valuable.

It’s literally a credit you can exchange for money. If you have no time, you have no money.

Sure, most of us already trade 40+ hours a week at a 9-5 (or whatever shift) for an hourly paycheck or salary. That time is spoken for. I’m not talking about that time.

I’m talking about your **free time**.

The hours you spend:
- Watching TV
- Playing video games
- Scrolling social media
- Petting your cat for three hours straight
- Watching the news
- Obsessing over politics
- Posting rants on Facebook or X about public figures

That time is pure, unallocated capital—the raw material of every dream you say you have but never make progress on.

Every minute you give to those things is a minute you’re choosing **not** to:
- Build a side income stream
- Work on your art
- Write, record, and market your music
- Learn a skill that pays 5-10× what you make now
- Create content
- Build a personal brand
- Start the business you keep talking about

Instead of complaining on social media about things you have zero control over, you could be creating something that puts money in your pocket while you sleep.

When you drown in worry, gloom, and endless outrage, you stay stuck in the exact same spot. That negativity is a distraction from your own success.

You could be using that same time to:
- Grow your audience
- Reach new customers
- Deliver value to clients
- Build something that compounds and gives you real options in life

The more intentional hours you invest in yourself, the bigger your brand (and bank account) can grow.

So ask yourself—honestly:

Is it worth ranting about things you can’t change…
or is it worth focusing on your own brand, reaching consumers, and building supplemental income that can eventually turn into real wealth?

You decide your own destiny. No one else is coming to save you or hand you the life you want.

People always ask me:
“Why don’t you play video games anymore?”
“Why don’t you ever watch TV or binge shows?”

My answer is simple:
Because it’s a total waste of time.

That doesn’t mean I hate fun. It means I did the math and decided my future is worth more than another season of someone else’s story or another ranked match that pays exactly $0.

Your free time is finite.
Treat it like the most expensive resource you’ll ever own—because it is.

Be picky with it.

The life you want is on the other side of better decisions about how you spend your evenings and weekends.

Choose wisely.
